Sociological Association of Ukraine is an all-Ukrainian non-governmental organization, members of which are national and foreign scientists, collectives and institutions working in social sciences. Previously, in 1968-1990, Association worked as Ukrainian section of Soviet Sociological Association. Its current status was declared at the constituent congress in 1990. Since 1993, it has been a collective member of International Sociological Association. The IV-th Congress of Ukrainian sociologists (2000) adopted a new set of Association Regulations and elected Association board consisting of the following members: V. Volovych, V. Vorona, V. Khmelko, M. Churylov, M. Shulga, A. Yaremenko (all from Kyiv), I. Popova (Odessa), V. Gorodyanenko (Dnipropetrovsk), B. Nagorny (Lugansk), V. Bakyrov, L. Sokuryanska (Kharkiv) and V. Pycha (Lviv). To be the President of SAU, for his second term, there was elected Mr. Shulga, Deputy Director of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Sociological science.
Association has to support the development of social science in Ukraine, methodological and scientific base of sociological researches, to defense legal interests of Ukrainian sociologists, members of Association, to favour the growth in their professional skills and qualifications. The following are the activities conducted by Association: organization and conduction of scientific conferences, seminars, round-tables, publication of theoretical works, examination of sociological projects, educational programs and manuals, exchange of sociological information, work co-ordination between territorial agencies. Association has its agencies in almost all Ukrainian oblasts. Registered by the government, the agencies form a base of SAU.
Association activities have been supported by the government. The fact can be confirmed by the Decree of the President of Ukraine "On Development of Sociological Science in Ukraine" of 25 April, 2001, 275/2001, 275/2001.
Among the most valuable projects of SAU, there are the following:
Annual all-Ukrainian scientific conferences and publication of their materials. For example, in 2000, there was held the all-Ukrainian sociological conference "Problems of Sociological Theory Development", the scientific reports delivered were published in a special book.
Once a year, Association together with Ukrainian Institution of Social Researches conducts All-Ukrainian School of Young Sociologists.
Annual Kharkiv Sociological Readings conducted together with Kharkiv National University.
Association agencies work according to their own plans, their activities are co-ordinated by Association.
